In 1861 an archive to collect all available documents on the
history of the island and some ancient glasses made in Murano
was founded thanks to the initiative of the glass-art historian
Vincenzo Zanetti and of the mayor of Murano Antonio Colleoni.
In 1862 a drawing school for glass-makers was liked to the museum,
and some pieces of the museum were actually used as models. Following
the suppression of the municipal autonomy of Murano in 1923,
and its annexation to the Municipality of Venice, the museum
became part of the Musei Civici Veneziani. The collections were
reorganised in 1932 and enlarged with the addition of the Correr,
Cicogna and Molin glass collections, some of the most beautiful
renaissance pieces of the museum. The seat of the museum is presently
the ancient Palazzo dei Vescovi di Torcello, a typical Moorish
gothic noble mansion, later restored in the XVII century. The
XVIII century frescoed ceiling of the saloon, by Francesco Zugno,
is the only remain of the ancient richness of the palace. |
